Dipropylene Glycol

The Whitaker Company > Products > Dipropylene Glycol

SUMMARY

Dipropylene glycol colorless viscous liquid. It is used to manufacture polymers, high-volume plasticizers, and alkyd resins. It is utilized as a reactant for unsaturated polyester resins and an initiator for polyurethane polyols. It is used as a raw material for laser printers, toner, and soaps and as a solvent for agricultural chemicals, aromatics extraction, printing inks, nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, coatings, and lacquers. It is used as an additive in hair and skin care products, as a coupling agent in textile lubricants, and solvent in hydraulic fluids.

INDUSTRIES

  • Oil & Gas: Used as a solvent and component in drilling fluids, gas treatment chemicals, and dehydration systems.
  • Food & Nutrition: Functions as a humectant, carrier, and solvent in regulated food and flavor applications.
  • Plastics Manufacturing: Serves as an intermediate in the production of plastics, resins, and polymer systems.
  • Chemical Manufacturing: Acts as a versatile solvent and building block for producing esters, plasticizers, and specialty chemicals.
  • Paints & Coatings: Provides solvency, improved flow, and humectancy in coating and paint formulations.
  • Agriculture: Used as a carrier, stabilizer, and solvent in pesticide and agrochemical formulations.
  • Personal Care & Cosmetics: Functions as a humectant, solvent, and fragrance carrier in lotions, perfumes, deodorants, and other personal care products.

APPLICATIONS

  • Plastic & Polymer Production: Acts as an intermediate and solvent in the manufacture of plastics, resins, and polymer systems.
  • Cosmetic Products: Serves as a humectant, solvent, and fragrance carrier in perfumes, lotions, creams, and deodorants.
  • Hair Treatment: Used in conditioners, styling products, and treatments to enhance moisture retention and product stability.
  • Bath & Body Care: Provides smooth texture, moisture balance, and fragrance stability in soaps, body washes, and skincare products.
  • Fuel Production & Additives: Functions as a stabilizer, additive component, or processing aid in fuel and fuel-additive formulations.
  • Paints & Varnishes: Offers solvency, improved flow, and humectancy in coating systems to enhance application and film performance.

MARKET SEGMENTS

  • Paint & Dyes: Dipropylene Glycol is used as a stable solvent and viscosity-modifying ingredient in dye and paint formulations, enhancing flow, application quality, and color consistency.
  • Gas: Used in fuel additives and gas-processing chemicals due to its strong solvency, thermal stability, and compatibility with hydrocarbon systems.
  • Cosmetics: Serves as a humectant, solvent, and ingredient carrier in skincare, haircare, and body care formulations to support moisture retention and improve overall product performance.
  • Agrochemicals: Acts as a solvent and formulation aid in agricultural chemical blends, improving stability, dispersibility, and delivery of active ingredients.

FUNCTIONS

  • Additive: Enhances product performance by improving stability, texture, or formulation characteristics across various chemical applications.
  • Plasticizer: Increases flexibility and workability in polymers and plastics by reducing brittleness and improving material softness.
  • Ingredient: Serves as a key component in formulated products, contributing to overall functionality, stability, or performance.
  • Solvent: Provides strong solvency for dissolving, blending, or dispersing other substances in industrial, cosmetic, and chemical formulations.
